Factory Engraved Deluxe Burgess Slide Action Takedown Shotgun, #5034, 12 ga., 30'' damascus barrel with game rib, brown damascus barrel and mag tube, blued frame, machine-turned bright bolt, stocks are at least select walnut, with later added red rubber buttpad which detracts little. Left side of frame beautifully engraved with running deer at pasture's edge; right side with pointing dog in meadow with rolling hills in background. Both scenes are set in oval design with multiple style borders and fine details engraved in banknote style. All work was probably executed by Conrad Ulrich, who was active between 1875-1913, and was known to execute most of Marlin's factory engraving. His English type banknote scrolls and multiple border styles are two of his known features. Shotgun shows no hand-engraved patent dates or maker's mark as was usually the case with Burgess's standard shotguns. The serial number is only visible when the barrel assembly is removed. Condition!
is excellent retaining approx. 97% original browning to barrel and mag tube. Frame and slide show approx. 96% original factory blue with light toning and minor speckling. Additional thinning to balance point and action areas. Stocks retain approx. 95% varnish, checkers show light flattening, stocks with minor darkening and light nicks from field use. A beautiful example of a very seldom seen shotgun enhanced by one of America's foremost engravers prior to the turn of the 20th Century. This shotgun could well have been a factory exhibition piece. (Walt Hallstein collection) Est.: $4,000-$6,000.
