Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver

This is a solid example of a factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver that was manufactured in 1853. This revolver features factory scroll and punch dot engraving on the rear sides of the loading lever, barrel lug and rear upper flats, the frame, trigger guard bow, butt and upper and lower back strap. The hammer sides are engraved with the distinctive wolf head motif. The top of the back strap has a shell design. The top barrel flat is hand engraved "Saml Colt" surrounded by simple line engraving. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS / PATENT" in a panel. The cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap with a "2" above the barrel serial number and a dot below the latter three, (signifying engraving or special finish). The loading lever and cylinder pin is marked with the partial serial number "6930", the wedge is numbered "81863" and the cylinder "181863". The loading lever and frame were casehardened, the barrel and cylinder blue and the grip frame silver plated brass.

About good, with a mottled brown and gray patina on the metal surfaces. The trigger guard and back strap retain 70% original age darkened silver plating. The cylinder is a mismatched replacement (see above). The exposed brass has an aged patina. The cylinder scene is 70% visible. The action does not function. The engraving and markings are clear. One of the frame studs is absent. The highly figured deluxe walnut grip is very good with some minor lower edge wear and light handling marks.
