Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver

Manufactured in 1855. The revolver has a five-inch barrel with loading lever, five-shot cylinder, and oval trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT" markings. The bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap are stamped with a punch dot above or below the serial number. The punch dot was used by Colt to designate parts for engraving or special finish. The sides of the barrel lug, upper edges of the barrel, sides of the loading lever, frame, hammer, trigger guard and backstrap are decorated with Germanic scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The sides of the hammer are engraved with a wolf's head motif. The engraving was either executed by Master Engraver Gustave Young or his staff. The top of the barrel is engraved "SamL Colt" in Old English letters surrounded by engraved flourishes. "COLTS/PATENT" is hand engraved in a panel on the left side of the frame. All of the visible screws are engraved. The full serial number "104010" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and on the side of the cylinder. The partial serial number, "4010" is stamped on the loading lever. The barrel and cylinder are blue, the loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened and the brass trigger guard and backstrap are silver plated. The one-piece grip is highly figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. Colt revolvers with factory engraving by Gustave Young are some of the most desirable American collector firearms.

Fine. The revolver retains 30% of the original blue finish on the top and sides of the barrel. The trigger guard and backstrap have 75% of the silver plated finish intact. The loading lever, frame, hammer and cylinder have a silver gray patina. The flawlessly executed scroll engraving is crisp and deep. The markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The cylinder retains most of the Stagecoach Holdup scene and shows firing wear with battered safety pins and moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear cylinder face. The grip is fine with scattered handling marks, 70% of the piano finish remains intact. This is both an attractive and fine example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver factory engraved by Gustave Young or his shop.
