Factory Cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver
This fine cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver was manufactured in 1859. The revolver has a blued barrel and five-shot cylinder, casehardened frame and hammer, silver-plated trigger guard and backstrap and one-piece, piano-finished walnut grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}" in two lines. The left side of the frame is stamped: "COLTS/PATENT". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT". A small "M" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number, "153432" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and cylinder. The loading lever is marked with the partial serial number, "3432". All of the visible serial numbers match. The Colt mahogany, American style, case has five compartments and is lined with brown velvet. The case contains: (1) Eagle and Shield powder flask with fixed charger and "COLTS PATENT" in a ribbon above two rows of stars, (2) blued, iron, two-cavity bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets with "COLT'S/PATENT" on the spruce cutter, (3) blued, L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, (4) small tin of percussion caps with "ELEY BROS/LONDON" embossed on the lid and (5) several lead balls and conical bullets.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 50% plus of the original blue, 70% casehardened finish and 40% silver-plated finish. Nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene is present on the cylinder. The cylinder pins are battered but flash pitting is minimal on the percussion nipples and cylinder. Most of the casehardened finish is present on the loading lever and frame and the case colors are strong. The trigger guard and backstrap have approximately 60% of the plated finish. There is some scattered flaking on the bottom of the trigger guard and grip strap. The grip is in very fine condition with close to 90% of the original piano finish and some minor edge wear on the butt. The markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The case exterior is in very good condition with only very minor handling and storage wear. The brown velvet lining is in good-very good condition. Wear is limited to several compression marks and two small tears from contact with the hammer and front sight pin. The flask is in very good condition with a mottled age patina and several shallow dents. The bullet mold has traces of the original blue finish and has numerous small dents in the sides of the blocks. The screwdriver/nipple wrench is in very good condition with about 75% of the original blue finish. The cap tin is in good condition and retains about 60% of the brown japanned finish and traces of the blue paper edge wrapping. This is a very good example of a completely original, factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver.
