Factory Cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with Relief-Carved Ivory Grips
This Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver was manufactured in 1858. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver-plated trigger guard and backstrap. The left side of the one-piece ivory grip is relief carved with a detailed Mexican Eagle and Serpent motif. The five-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with the Colt Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLT'S PATENT". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "{ ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}" in two lines. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines. A small "M" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard shoulder, "V" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow and "2" is stamped on the left side of the barrel lug. The full serial number, "149543" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and cylinder. The partial serial number, "9543" is stamped on the loading lever, cylinder pin and barrel wedge. All of the serial numbers match. The Colt, mahogany, American style, case has five compartments and is lined with maroon velvet. The case contains: (1) 1849 Pocket Model, Eagle and Shield, fixed charger, powder flask with "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines above two rows of stars, (2) blued, L-shaped, combination nipple wrench/screwdriver, (3) 1849 Pocket Model, brass, double cavity, bullet mold for conical bullets and round balls; the mold is not fitted with a spruce cutter and is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" across the top of the blocks, (4) "W. & C. ELEY" tin of "METAL-LINED/CAPS/Made expressly for/COLT'S Pt/Belt and Pocket PISTOLS" and (5) several lead, .31 caliber, round balls and conical bullets. All of the accessories appear to be correct for and original to this casing.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original high polish blue finish and shows minimal firing wear. The barrel has 85% of the high polish blue finish with some edge wear and finish loss on the top flat and sides of the lug near the breech. The cylinder has about 40% of the blue finish and retains nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The loading lever and frame have close to 90% of the vivid case colors. The case colors on the hammer have silvered slightly and the sides have some light flash pitting. The backstrap and trigger guard have about 85% of the silver-plated finish. The barrel and frame markings are sharp. All of the cylinder pins are intact. There is some light flash pitting on the percussion nipples. The replacement ivory grip is in fine condition; the relief-carved Eagle and Serpent is crisp. The ivory grip has an attractive patina; the right side of the grip has a darker cast than the left. The case is in very good overall condition; there are two minor, hairline cracks that run across the top of the lid; the rest of the exterior shows only minor storage wear and is in fine condition. The maroon velvet lining is in very good condition. Wear is limited to fading and compression marks on the bottom from contact with the revolver. The flask is in good condition with an even mustard patina and one small dent on the body; the spring retains most of the original niter blue. The screw-driver/wrench is in fine condition with most of the original dull blue finish. The bullet mold is excellent and has most of the original finish with crisp markings; wear is limited to some minor scratches. The cap tin is in good-very good condition; the green paper label is stained but intact, about 30% of the tinned finish is present on the body and most of the percussion caps are present. This is a very good example of a pre-Civil War factory cased, Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with elegant, relief-carved ivory grips and original accessories.
