This is a wonderful piece that was salvaged from a long bench. It is in the Flemish style, or that of French Aubusson, but this is not a period piece. It does have age however, and I would guess it to date from the early 20th century. The central motif appears to be a coat of arms. There are a pair of Rubenesque nude women flanking the centerpiece, which is kind of fun, and the flowers and foliage typical of that style. The ground behind the figures is dark brown, bordered in grey (which is actually teal that has faded with time), and ochre. The outermost edge, which would have wrapped around the sides of the cushion, is black. The edges are notched. There are parts of the design that have not been filled in. I assume that was done deliberately as the tapestry was used on the bench as evidenced by the upholstery tack holes in the back. The total size is 5 ft. long by 2 ft. wide. The dimensions from the grey border are 55.5" long by 14" wide. This will recover a bench or make a wonderful long bolster for a sofa.
