(1847 - 1922) American inventor of the telephone, formed the Bell Telephone Company, and established the Volta Laboratory which produced numerous related inventions and improvements on existing technology. Good content A.L.S. "Alexander Graham Bell" 1p. 8vo., Washington, [n.d.], to President Gilman of Johns Hopkins University, inviting him to a dinner. In part: "…It would give me pleasure to see you here quite informally on Saturday evening…to meet Prof. Simon Newcomb and a few other gentlemen…". Simon Newcomb (1835-1909) was a professor of mathematics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins, and an editor of the American Journal of Mathematics for many years. He was also a founding member and first president of the American Astronomical Society. Boldly written and fine condition.
