FRENCH WWI ACES’ GROUPING - NUNGESSER AND GUYNEMER Comprised of the following items pertaining to France’s two great WWI Aces. 1) Framed handwritten statement in ink by Charles Nungesser which translates to: "The true hero of this war is the foot soldier. Paris 29-2-19”. Matted in frame, sight size 8-1/2”x 10” CONDITION: Exc. 2) Three photographic copy prints of Charles Nungesser in uniform. 3) Framed handwritten statement in ink by Georges Guynemer that translates to: "A soldier must have only one thought: to serve. 20-Feb-’15”. Matted to sight size 8-1/2” x 10”. 4) Red 12”x15-1/2” cloth-bound folio "Guynemer/Heroes Legendaire” with affixed bronze medallion depicting a stork in flight - the insignia for SPA 3, Guynemer’s squadron. The folio contains over 30 reproduction photographs and documents from Guynemer’s service and about a dozen chromolithographic prints of paintings by Falucci, including one depicting Guynemer’s medals and decorations. The volume is numbered 804. CONDITION: Binding and inner liners show some wear, small splits and light discoloration, some discoloration to edges of prints and pages, but overall very good, printed on heavy high-quality paper. 5) Large 9-12”x12-1/2”) softbound volume titled "Memorial Guynemer”, issued in 1945 to proclaim the opera of the same name which was performed by the "Theatre National De L’Opera”. The volume is numbered 1174 and is signed by the Director, Rene Hervouin. The front section of the book celebrates Guynemer’s career and contains testimonial letters from high-ranking officers of US, Canadian, British, and Russian air corps, images of Guynemer, and an illustration of his medals. Throughout the book are numerous writings, interspersed with advertisements from sponsors of the opera. Bound into the center of the book is an opera program, and in the back are photographs of the performers. CONDITION: Minor losses on spine, otherwise good with little wear. 6) A 5”x7” wartime photo of Guynemer about to be decorated, standing before ranked troops and a row of biplanes.
