EARLY FRENCH SILVER & GILT SPOON FAMILY FIGS Fabulous silver and silver-gilt spoon. Hallmarks indicate that it was made in France pre revolution (1789-90) but imported to London 1894. Measures:6 3/4" long; weighs 2oz. Gorgeous spoon. Gilded bowl. Handle consists of pierced cartouche join, followed by pierced and twisted neck and finally a large figural group , beginning with a shell and pair of dolphins on either side of a base on which stand a heroic figure of a woman with flowing robes, holding one child while another child clings to her skirts. Extremely fine detail and casting. Great patina.
Marks: The front of the bowl has French hallmarks. A crowned elaborate letter signifies the charge;a complex cartouche is the maker's mark. maker's mark. According to "Antique Silver" Ian Pickford, page25, these are pre-revolutionary marks ie pre 1789-90. The back of the bowl has the English marks as follows: BM; lion passant ; date letter 't' (1894); an F in an oval; leopard's head (London). Condition: very good.
