Manuscript document, 2pp, legal folio, Millersburgh, Apr 23,1820. Being a true copy of the deed by which Mark Antony Alexis Giraud gives to John S. Vermont for the indenture of 20 years a one-year-old Negro girl named Glowenia. In part, “...when the said girl Glowenia shall become free to all intents, and, fix the day of her manumission to the fourth July one thousand eight hundred forty-one. Mr. John Vemont knows perfectly how much important for this poor little girl that she should be taught the proper to her sex, in order to be useful to the society in lieu to be a burthen upon the community...with the prospects of her freedom in her youth, she will deserve and will know to enjoy worthily of it at twenty one years....” On verso is Vemont’s statement, May 22, 1841, granting freedom. In part, “...has this day set her at liberty, & when the fourth day of July next arrives, I will give the original paper or indenture to the sd. Glowenia, but it is understood that from this day to the end of her life she is free...” Witnessed by the County Court of Bourbon County, KY, at bottom margin.
