<p><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>[FREEDMEN] </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>Unusual <b>war-date</b> report of a woman involved in a military project. Partly printed DS, 1p, 4to, Vicksburg, 1864. On Office Provost Marshal of Freedmen letterhead, a report by </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform: uppercase'>Jane C. Williams, </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>Agent, provides information on Freedmen employed on an unnamed plantation. She reports on 14 adults and four children of which eight adults work in the field, “<i>the rest are house servants, nurses, carriage driver &cc</i>.” earning wages of $7 a month for men, $5 for women. She remarks, “<i>The servants have all been well cared for & well fed, up to this time—are cheerful & contented, & work as well as can be expected.</i>” Boldly penned and signed. Fine example.</span></p>

1. Auction Catalogue No. 19 is a Mail, Fax, Phone, Email and
Internet Live Bid Auction and is conducted under the laws of the State
of West Virginia by Gil Griggs, Licensee of Charleston, W. V. License
No. 002.
2. Absentee bid closing date is April 5th, 2002, 10:00 PM EST.
3. There is a 15% Buyer’s Premium charged on the final hammer price
of each lot. An additional 2½% Premium will be added to any lots
purchased through ebayliveauctions.com.
4. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any
reason.

6. In the event of duplicate high bids, the earliest bid received
will be the winner.
