<p><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>[FREEDMEN] </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>Unusual <b>war-date</b> report of a woman involved in a military project. Partly printed DS, 1p, 4to, Vicksburg, 1864. On Office Provost Marshal of Freedmen letterhead, a report by </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform: uppercase'>Jane C. Williams, </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>Agent, provides information on Freedmen employed on an unnamed plantation. She reports on 14 adults and four children of which eight adults work in the field, “<i>the rest are house servants, nurses, carriage driver &cc</i>.” earning wages of $7 a month for men, $5 for women. She remarks, “<i>The servants have all been well cared for & well fed, up to this time—are cheerful & contented, & work as well as can be expected.</i>” Boldly penned and signed.
