<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>(1815-1901). US army officer; Seminole and Mexican War veteran; postwar Indian fighter, 3rd Cavalry and 10th Cavalry, receiving brevets to Lieut. Colonel. Fine CDV quarter-length portrait vignette in uniform. C.L. Lochman’s Photograph Gallery, Carlisle, PA, backstamp. Image sharp and clearly defined. Light soiling and occasional edge wrinkling on recto; light dampstain across bottom mount on verso; else VG. During the Civil War, Van Vliet fought at Ft. Gibson, Jackson, Vicksburg, was wounded at Bayou Coteau, participated at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg; ADC to General Burnside. Postwar he commanded Ft. Hualpai in AZ in 1866 as captain of 3rd Cavalry and participated in the Reynolds campaign on Powder River and with Crook’s Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition and at Rosebud. As major of 10th Cavalry, he took part in operations against Geronimo in NM and AZ.
