(1817 - 1895) Black-American reformer born a slave, Douglass was instrumental in the creation of the Union Negro regiments which fought with great distinction during the war. Front panel of an envelope addressed in Douglass' hand to a man in New York, postmarked May 5, 1880, sold with the Nov. 24, 1883 front page of Harper's Weekly bearing a superlative 9" x 11" engraving of the great civil rights leader. Envelope is quite chipped, engraving is fine.
