(1817 - 1895) Black-American reformer born a slave, Douglass was instrumental in the creation of the Union Negro regiments which fought with great distinction during the war. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Rochester, June 8, 1869 to C. S. Carter, in part: "...I have nopt yet fully determined upon a Western tour the approaching Lecturing Season. You may if you please place my name in the list of probable lecturers and leave the announcem't of my subject os subjects t a future time...". Two unrelated signatures pasted to verso, else very good.
