<B>FRANZ STRAHALM (1879-1935)</B></I><BR>Untitled Indian Paintbrushes and Coreopsis<BR>Oil on artistboard<BR>32 x 44 inches (81.3 x 111.8 cm)<BR>Signed lower left<BR><BR> Born in Vienna, Strahalm immigrated to Mexico in 1909. He subsequently moved to San Antonio in 1911. In 1919, he started his own art school in San Antonio, and in 1921 he moved to Dallas where he remained until his death. Strahalm was a frequent exhibitor with the women's clubs around the state.<BR><BR>This large-scale canvas must be considered one of Franz Strahalm's principal works. The composition places the viewer in the shadows of a small shaded creek bed looking out into a sun-filled field that is carpeted with coreopsis and Indian paintbrushes. The artist has appropriately used a thick impasto to impart richness and depth to the surface of the painting.<B>Condition Report:</B> Excellent condition. Painting would benefit from a light surface cleaning.
