FRANK WHEATON
(1833 - 1903) Union brigadier general of the 2nd R.I. Vols, heavily engaged at Bull Run, later leading the regiment in nearly every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac. Battlefield dispatch addressed to Col. John F. Ballier of the 98th Pa. Vols., two days after the battle of Williamsburg, 3pp. 8vo., [n.p.], May 7, 1862, in pencil. In full: "We are going on a Reconnaissance. One regiment and 4 companies of cavalry and one light battery, with your regiment and mine, forms the force. Our return to this particular camp is doubtful therefore, we must leave in complete marching order, taking everything we have - in each cartridge box, 40 rounds, and one wagon following with not more than 11 or 12 hundred pounds of ammunition as a reserve supply. Only one wagon for each infantry regiment (2 in all) will go. Leave a small guard of not more than 10 men to come on with the train in rear & to protect the ammunition and other property you may leave here. An officer must be left with this guard to see that your train is consolidated and that all your property is kept together and brought up to us when sent for. It must not, until further order, go in advance of our advance brigade. There are no rations to be produced here and beef cattle will be drawn along for us with salt. My regiment will presently move; please follow it and then leave it in charge of some officer and join me at the head of my regiment. I will then tell you all the object of this expedition". Bottom of last page is trimmed, else very good. Wheaton was likely preparing for the regiment's march to Prospect Hill, Va., after which the force ambarked for the Peninsula at the end of the month.

Estimate: $300 - 400.
