Johnson was a master of the nocturne painting.
The special technique, he perfected to paint nighttime
scenes, became known as "The Johnson Moonlight
Technique". Johnson was born in Iowa and studied
at the Art Students League in New York. In 1920 he
moved to California where he shared a studio in
Alhambra with Clyde Forsythe for many years. The
studio became a gathering place for some of the best
known artists of the period - Charles Russell, Edward
Borein, Dean Cromwell, and Norman Rockwell.
Johnson was co-founder of the Biltmore Art Gallery
in the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, He died from
spinal meningitis at the height of his career in 1939.
