<B>REDLINGER</B></I><BR><I>Billy the Kid</B></I>, 1932<BR>Book, Graphite on paper<BR>10-1/2 x 8 inches (26.7 x 20.3 cm)<BR>Signed and dated lower right<BR> Frank Redlinger was fascinated by the legend of Billy the Kid. "The Kid" was little known when alive, but became legendary after his killer, Sheriff Patrick Garrett, published the wildly popular book, <I>The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid.</B></I> From this starting point, the Kid became one of the legendary figures of the American Old West. Hollywood has had a particular fascination with Billy the Kid, starting with the 1930 film, <I>Bill the Kid</B></I>, directed by King Vidor. In 1938, Roy Rogers played dual roles in <I>Bill the Kid Returns.</B></I> In 1941, the original 1930 film was remade with Robert Taylor and Brian Don Levy starring, and in 1943, Howard Hughes released the film, <I>The Outlaw.</B></I> Since that time, dozens of films have been based on the legend of Billy the Kid. Similarly, musicians have drawn on the legend, from Bon Jovi, to Bob Dylan, to early 1900 ballads of Billy. This <I>Billy the Kid</B></I> book by Frank Redlinger was intended to be published. Each drawing was to be an individual linoleum block print.
