In 1849, the federal government sent Capitan Randolph Marcy to explore the wild and vast lands to the north and west of Austin inhabited by the warlike Comanche Indians. The fort was originally known as "The Post on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River." Lieutenant Clinton Lear, the posts quarter master, wrote to his wife that he could not imagine that "God ever intended for white men to occupy such a barren waste."
