Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, and Frank Reaugh expert:

I have examined carefully the scans you sent me of the "D" pastel. Based on the subject and palette, I believe the pastel is a good example of Mr. Reaugh's work from about 1885 to 1890. I believe "D" may be from a group of pastels Mr. Reaugh painted before he moved from Terrell to Oak Cliff. These pastels tend to have a greenish cast, largely due to Mr. Reaugh's practice of covering the entire surface of the paper with an olive drab color to function as underpainting. However, his paintings done closer to 1890 are more yellow due to a shift toward an yellow ochre underpainting. The "D" pastel may have been completed after Mr. Reaugh saw his first color paintings during a trip to New York in 1883. Furthermore, the "D" pastel reminds me of our important "Sunrise on the Prairie."

Provenance:
Estate of Reveau Bassett
Acquired from the above by the present ownerCondition Report: Excellent condition.
