FRANK D. MERRILL
(1903 - 1955) American army officer who commanded "Merrill's Marauders" deep behind Japanese lines in Burma and cleared the Burma road supply route. His book The Pageant of Chinese History, by Elizabeth Seeger (London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1934), 386pp. 8vo. Signed twice by Merrill on the front paste-down "F. D. Merrill Capt. Cav." and once adding "American Embassy Tokyo", with two pages of pencil notes on Chinese history on one of the rear flyleaves, Tokyo bookseller's label. Spine faded, a few small spots to red cloth covers, else fine. In 1938, Merrill became the military attaché in Tokyo where he studied the Japanese language. Rare!
