539. FRANCIS THOMPSON

“you vanish from me to another”
(1859-1907). English poet and critic best known for his poem “The Hound of Heaven” contained in his first published volume (1893). Other works include Life of St. Ignatius Loyola (1909) and A Renegade Poet, and Other Essays (1910). ALS in bold pencil, 3½pp, small 8vo, Westbourne Grove, Jun 14, 1903. To Monica Meynell on her wedding day, explaining that he had arrived at the church too early, thought he was too late and went home. In part, “You were a prophetess (though you needed not to be a sibyl to foretell my tricks and manners). I reached the church just ten minutes after twelve, to find vacancy, as you had forewarned me...So I can only wish by letter you and your husband all the happiness God can imagine for you. It seems but the other day, my dearest sister...that you were a child with me at Friston, and I myself still very much of a child. Now the time is come I foresaw then,—‘Knowing well, when some few days are over, / You vanish from me to another.’ You may pardon me if I feel a little sadness, even while I am glad for your gladness...” Light toning and soiling; tiny mounting traces; else VG. Published in The Letters, edited by Walsh. Monica Meynell, later Saleeby, was a daughter of Wilfrid and Alice Meynell who had rescued Thompson from the streets and remained his literary patrons until his death.
