American lawyer and poet inspired to write “The Defence of Fort M’Henry” later “The Star Spangled Banner” upon witnessing the sight of the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the British bombardment in the War of 1812. ADS “F S Key,” 1p, 8"x8", Frederick, MD, Dec. 29, 1804. A petition for relief from a judgment rendered by Justice of the Peace John Houston against Key’s client, John Troxel, Jr., in favor of Elizabeth Faris in the sum of 114 shillings and six pence, plus costs. Initialed beneath docket on verso. General toning, minor edge foxing, occasional ink splotching and transfer, o/w VG/Fine. This dates from about three years after Key began his law practice in Frederick and had moved to Georgetown. His favorable reputation as an attorney led to his being asked to negotiate he release of a prisoner in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812 during which he was present at the British bombardment<b>.</b></span></p>
