"...I learn by the person who own'd Dickerson's Schooner that the Custom house officers at Newhaven has Seized both Vessell and Cargo and libelled the same at New London on pretense of the Lisbon Wines being Contraband, a Step that surprizes all people here. I procured a Slate of the Case from Mr Smith the Lawyer with his opinion...also a Letter from judge Morris...in our favour who I flatter myself will pay a regard to his principals...as he seldom determines any Intricate Cases in that Court without first obtaining Col Morris's opinion; I have also wrote to Mr Chew of New London to Claim your Wine, but as you know the general Character of the people of that Colony I fear that right or wrong they will divide the property between them. I could wish Mr Bradford had proceeded there as he first Intended..." Small hole in text and a couple of tears at margin. Light toning at folds, o/w VG. Boldly penned and easily read. $3,000-4,000
