FRANCIS E. SPINNER
"Women have done more to bring about this accursed rebellion than men…"

(1802-1890) Treasurer of the United States under three presidents, commencing with Abraham Lincoln. Superb, misogynist manuscript L.S. 2pp. 4to., Washington, Jan. 25, 1865, on his Secretary of the Treasury letterhead to F. D. Marshall in New York, in part: "...I have procured you the pass for yourself to Savannah, and from Savannah to New York for yourself and Mrs. King. I do hope Mrs. King is loyal. If she turns out otherwise I shall regret my interference on her behalf. Women have done more to bring about this accursed rebellion than men, and none have been so active in fanning the flames as those of Northern origin. If I had my way not one of them would ever be permitted to come North, if I permitted them to remain within the bounds of the United States...". Folds with marginal splits thereon, a tape repair to top left margin, clear of text, very good.

Estimate: $100 - 150.
