Created cardinal (1946); archbishop of NY; named apostolic vicar to US armed forces during World War II. Collection of three assorted autographs referencing Michaelangelo’s The Pietá that was brought from the Vatican to the US in 1964. TLS, 1p, 4to, New York, Jan 7, 1966, to Rev. Greenway. In part, “...I have just returned from Vietnam...I deeply appreciate your generous words about me. I am, of course, pleased to return the photograph of the return of the Pieta with the inscription you suggested...” Plus two b/w 10”x8” images, being an SP of Spellman aboard the barge Challenger in the Hudson River which brought The Pieta up the Hudson to NY, Apr 14, 1964, evidencing a severe vertical crease near right border well away from Spellman’s image and signature; and an ISP of The Pieta as it is being prepared for the return to Italy. Internet Live Bid Auction and is conducted under the laws of the State
of West Virginia by Gil Griggs, Licensee of Charleston, W. V. License
No. 002.
2. Absentee bid closing date is April 5th, 2002, 10:00 PM EST.
3. There is a 15% Buyer’s Premium charged on the final hammer price
of each lot. An additional 2½% Premium will be added to any lots
purchased through ebayliveauctions.com.
4. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any
reason.

6. In the event of duplicate high bids, the earliest bid received

14. Golden Guarantee: All material is returnable within seven day
providing that it comes back in the same condition. There is a
