FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH OF SIOUX CHIEF AMERICAN HORSE. Framed and matted 7-1/2” x 5-1/2” photo with pencil notation on back indicating stock # 840 by Alexander Gardner and identifying the subject as American Horse, Oglala Sioux. American Horse was one of the more reasoned, conciliatory of the Sioux chiefs, and encouraged his followers to cooperate with the demands of the whites in order to prevent the annihilation of their tribes. He was an eloquent speaker and was influential in keeping the peace, especially during the uprisings surrounding the Ghost Dance movement. Photographer Alexander Gardner was Matthew Brady’s assistant, he was appointed to the staff of Gen. George McClellan as a Captain. His photographs of the battles of Antietam, Fredricksburg, Gettysburg, and Petersburg, among others, are classics and he published a two-volume set of them after the war. He later became the official photographer of the Union Pacific Railroad and took many photographs of Western scenes and people, including notable Native Americans. CONDITION: Very good. 8-87210 SO25
