FOURTEENTH CONNECTICUT SOLDIER DESCRIBES THE SURRENDER OF LEE: Union soldier's letter 4pp. 8vo., Camp 14th Conn. Vols., Burkesville, Va., April 24th, 1865, in which Pvt. George Seufert describes the Appomattox campaign and the surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, in part: "...We have had a hard time of late hard marching and fighting for seven days...four times after marching all day we had to build breast works at night thinking we had Lee in a trap, but found our mistake early in the morning...we dit not ask for rest until we would have Lee witch we succeeded on the 9th of April...I would not have been absent that last campaign for any money in the world. A sight like the surrender of Lee was never before witnesst in any war and will perhaps never be seen for generations to come. The army was wild with joy. At half past Ten o Clock A.M. on the above named day General Meade rode by every single regiment in our division, swinging his hat without stopping one second. While the surrender was going on we stacket Arms about half a mile from the Rebel line, but as soon the surrender was signed we had a chance to see and talk with them, but was not allowed to go into their camp...still we did go in by flanking the guard stationed on the road. As I am writing this the order came to our Headquarters to be ready to march in the morning and have 40 rounds of ammunition. I do not know where we go but however think it is in the rear of Johnson...It seems they cannot git any good of him without the boys of the old 2nd Corps that wears their clubs on their caps ...if we shall get there before he is surrendert we show him like Lee that clubs is trump again!..." With omplete transcription, very good to near fine condition. $600-800
