(FOUR UNION GENERALS)
Nice war-date A.L.S. "Ferrier Nazer" as lieutenant colonel in the 4th New York Cavalry, 1p. 4to., "Camp Hall's Farm", Sept. 15, 1862, to the adjutant general of the United States concerning, in part: "…Hearing…that Gov. Morgan has appointed as colonel…L. Palmer di Cesnola, I hereby enter my solemn protest against such appointment as being unjust in every respect to myself…". Endorsed on the verso by Brigadier General ROBERT H. MILROY (1816 -1890), who sided with Nazer in his request, Brigadier General SETH WILLIAMS (1822 - 1866), Major General NATHANIEL BANKS (1816 - 1894), and Brevet Brigadier General THOMAS M. VINCENT (1832 - 1909), all of whom just forwarded the letter through military channels. Interestingly, Nazer's request went unheeded and di Cesnola took over command of the regiment and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in leading his regiment during the Gettysburg campaign at the battle of Aldie on June 17, 1863. Two very small smudges to Milroy's signature, else very good.
