<B>FOSSIL STROMATOLITE BOX</B></I><BR> <I>Handcrafted in Italy<BR>Stone source: Bolivia</B></I><BR>Fossil stromatolites are very ancient remnants of fossil algal "reefs" hundreds of millions of years old. The unique "eyed" material, featured in this box, is found in the high Andes Mountains of Bolivia - in a location so remote that material is transported by either burro or helicopter because access is so difficult. The concentric bands are analogous to tree growth rings, expanding as these ancient simple organisms grew in response to the bright sunlight of their tropical home. The concentric patterns are matched from the top downward on each side - attesting to the skill of the master lapidary artist. The box is in excellent condition and has colors ranging from golden-brown to brown-black.
