<B>FOSSIL PALM WOOD INLAY BOX</B></I><BR> <I>Handcrafted in Italy<BR>Fossil source: Texas/Louisiana <BR>Species: Palmoxylon sp., Oligocene Epoch (30 Million Years Ago)</B></I><BR>Fossil palm wood from the Texas/Louisiana region is so striking that it has been designated as the State Stone of Texas and the State Fossil of Louisiana. This fine slice of petrified fossil palm contains very prominent rod-like structures that show up as spots in the pattern of the wood. These are sclerenchyma bundles that gave the wood its vertical strength. The actual palm wood was replaced over time by silica, creating a durable fossil that takes well to polishing. This complete fossil slice has been skillfully inlaid into a black onyx box and is framed with a fine 1/8 inch inlaid stripe of deep-red poppy jasper which has also been used to encircle the box. The box interior is black onyx and features gold-plated hinges. In fine condition.
