<B>FOSSIL FISH PLATE</B></I><BR> <I>Priscacara liops</B></I><BR><I>Eocene<BR>Green River Formation, Wyoming</B></I><BR>A classic example, not only of this distinctive inhabitant of the Green River Fossil Lake system, but also of the excellent preservation to be found in the fossil record there. The <I>Priscacara liops</B></I> was the smaller of the two species in this genus (the other being the <I>Priscacara serrata</B></I>). Their name means "primitive head" and both species are immediately recognizable from the characteristically spiny dorsal and anal fins that may well have been a defense against being swallowed from behind. It was a schooling fish, and we have here three particularly fine examples, "swimming" gracefully across the pale limestone matrix. The largest is 5¾ inches long and the matrix is mounted in a stained wooden frame measuring 27 ½ x 23 ½ inches and ready for hanging.<BR><BR><b>Shipping:</b> Requires 3rd Party Shipping (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.heritageauctions.com/common/shipping.php">view shipping information</a>)
