(FORT SUMTER MUSTER ROLL): A great war-date Confederate muster roll, 2pp. measuring 33" x 19 1/2", for Co. D, 1st South Carolina Artillery, Fort Sumter, S.C., Feb. 28, 1863 detailing the whereabouts of each man of the company for the period of Dec. 31, 1862 to Feb. 28, 1863. The discipline and accoutrements are listed as "good" with the clothing reading "good, but somewhat worn". 70 men are listed, two of which were deserters with one having died during that time and, incredibly, two men were detailed as shoemakers showing the affects of the blockade on the South. The regiment participated in the bombardment of Ft. Sumter in April 1861, fought in the defense of Port Royal in November 1861. Manned the guns that helped repel the Federal assault on Secessionville in June 1862. Helped defeat the numerous Federal ironclad attacks against Ft. Sumter and defended the Confederate right flank at Battery Wagner in 1863. During the remainder of the war they defended Charleston until February 1865 at which time they evacuated the fort to fight Sherman in the Carolinas. Some very minor paper loss with negligible soiling and toning, else very good. $500-700
