FORT GILLEPSIE PHOTO CARD
Cabinet card photograph of George Gillepsie's stone house located in Limestone, Tennessee. Photo was taken September 19th, 1915 with a handwritten inscription on the verso, 5.25 x 7.75 inches. The house was originally built by George Gillepsie and constructed by Seth Smith, a Quaker stonemason from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1792. The house sits on the site of a previous fort and marked the dividing lines of Tennessee's Washington and Greene counties in 1783. Gillepsie was an early settler of the area and was one of many who signed a petition to seperate western North Carolina (eastern Tennessee) into a 14th state, 'Franklin', which cumulated into a minor battle, 'The Battle of Franklin'. The State of Franklin was dissolved and officially ended in 1791.
