This Lot features a poster for one of the most iconic and beloved Science Fiction films in cinema history, FORBIDDEN PLANET. This 1956 Original Belgian, Linen Backed Window Card measures 22 1/4" X 30" and features Stunning artwork of one of Science Fiction's most recognizable creations - ROBBIE THE ROBOT! This Vintage window card is linen backed and glued to a white matting material, ready for framing. Window Cards of the era typically featured a 4 inch border where the name and address of the theatre playing the film would be printed. In many cases, that top border has been trimmed for framing and is generally accepted by collectors as a common and acceptable practice. In this case, the additonal 4 inches remains with the information for the theater intact. This poster is in overall Excellent condition with few noticable defects. Even the borders, that usually show wear in a poster this age are incredibly clean. As I am finding with many international posters from Belgium and other countries, what appears to be a Customs or shipping stamp has been put directly on the poster. There are two on this poster. One is in the top right border over part of the theater information. The other is on the artwork itself and slightly covers a small area of the spaceship in the background. This stunning artwork features the iconic Robbie the Robot carrying a woman with the spaceship in the background. This is a beautifully preserverd poster for one of the most beloved science fiction films in Cinema history. (From Wikipedia) Forbidden Planet is a 1956 American science fiction film, produced by Nicholas Nayfack, directed by Fred M. Wilcox, that stars Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen. Shot in Eastmancolor and CinemaScope, it is considered one of the great science fiction films of the 1950s, a precursor of contemporary science fiction cinema. The characters and isolated setting have been compared to those in William Shakespeare's The Tempest, and the plot contains certain analogues to the play, leading many to consider it a loose adaptation.
Forbidden Planet pioneered several aspects of science fiction cinema. It was the first science fiction film to depict humans traveling in a faster-than-light starship of their own creation. It was also the first to be set entirely on another planet in interstellar space, far away from Earth. The Robby the Robot character is one of the first film robots that was more than just a mechanical "tin can" on legs; Robby displays a distinct personality and is an integral supporting character in the film. Outside science fiction, the film was groundbreaking as the first of any genre to use an entirely electronic musical score, courtesy of Bebe and Louis Barron.
Forbidden Planet's effects team was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 29th Academy Awards. In 2013, the picture was entered into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
