An unusual folk art relic cane carved from wood salvaged from the Pennsylvania State Capital after the fire ofFebruary 2nd, 1897. This cane is made of 2 pieces of carved walnut with a tau type handle carved in the form of analligator (odd for Pennsylvania!). The handle is mounted on a tapered shaft with the Pennsylvania state seal carvedon top front, with 2 spiraling lines of carved inscriptions that read "Erected May 31, 1813 Fire Feb. 2, 1897" and"From The State Capital Building of PA." Below this is a carved garter with the carver's name "J.L. Kaufman."Total length 34.5" with 1.5" nickel & steel ferrule.Great patina.Tip of alligator's tail is chipped off, original old varnish finish in excellent condition.(EST 500-700)
