GAME GUN. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 6957. Mfg. 1897. Bbls. 28" dovetailed fitted w/ interchangeable choke tubes. Slightly raised & swamped game rib engraved "2" toward breech end (this is gun number 2 of a pair w/ "2" engraved on trigger tang & forend iron). Tops of bbls. engraved "Stephen Grant & Sons" & "7. Bury Street, St. James's, London, England." Bbl. flats stamped w/ London nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers & 3 tons. Serial numbers stamped on bottoms of bbls. Casehardened sidelock action features opening lever on right side, nonautomatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), bushed strikers & dbl. triggers. Action is filed in Grant "Best" fashion w/ well shaped beads & classic sculpting of fences. Action & lockplates engraved w/ near full coverage very well cut sm. scroll w/in line & scroll borders. "Stephen Grant & Sons" is at the bottom of each lockplate. Blued trigger guard is also scroll engraved. S# is on tang. Very finely marbled & lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 3/8" over thinned Kick-Eez pad on 1" auxiliary spring recoil system & an all adj. comb has been fitted. Stock also features classic drop points, point pattern checkering at grip & a silver oval on toeline engraved w/ the monogram "PEH"(?). Matching splinter, 1893 Grant patent ejector, forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: bbls: bore diameter: right: .728", left: .727", both restricted w/ choke tubes. Minimum Wall Thickness: right: .034", left: .040". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/4". DAC: Adj. LOP: 14 3/8". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 3 oz. CONDITION: very good to fine as refurbished. Bbls. retaining over 95% best reblack. Action & locks retain approx. 30% original casehardening color mostly faded to a pleasing silver gray. Engraving remains clear. Side lever & trigger guard reblued, retaining nearly all of that blue. Stocks retain nearly all of a good quality oil refinish, most likely done contemporary w/ addition of pad & adj. comb. Bores are bright & shiny. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong & in time. A classic antique Grant w/ some useful modern alterations. (01-20179/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-7,000.
