FINE Remington Mississippi 1858 Zouave rifle, .58 percussion, 33" barrel with a bright excellent seven-groove bore. The barrel is a deep original dark blue-gray with some light toning to pewter on the midsection of the barrel and around the tang and breech, also with remnants of some very light oxidation staining. The barrel shows appropriate eaglehead and firing proofs and the tang is dated 1863 with "Steel" and "BH" and "FH inspectors markings on the left barrel flat. The lockplate shows some nice mottled remnants of color case-hardening and is primarily a tarnished pewter patina with some very light oxidation staining, it is appropriately U.S. eagle and maker marked and is also dated 1863. All the brass furniture has toned to a warm goldenrod patina and the butt and patchbox screws exhibit nice pale fire temper blue. The stock rates excellent with crisp edges and two good left side cartouches and some very light handling marks. The appropriate sights, right side bayonet lug and original ramrod are intact and the lock is crisp and mechanically functional; the spare nipple is in place inside the patchbox. A very attractive example overall.
