FINE RARE MARTIALLY-MARKED MODEL 1860 HENRY RIFLE
FINE RARE MARTIALLY-MARKED MODEL 1860 HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Beautiful standard Henry with 24-1/4” oct bbl with integral magazine tube, German silver front sight, 900 yard Henry ladder rear sight. It has straight-grained stock with straight grip and crescent brass buttplate. The left side of bbl assembly and the left side of the buttstock have factory sling loops. The buttstock has a fine, pronounced “Henry bump”. The receiver has the early faceted receiver ring, as on the earlier guns versus the later round top receiver, and has the “H” inspector mark on the lower tang, like the earlier receivers. The left side of the wrist, at the receiver, has tiny “A.W.M.” inspector marks. This rifle does not appear on the Springfield Research website, but another, #9701, is listed as having been issued to a trooper in Co. B 3rd Veteran Volunteers. It is accompanied by an original 4-piece iron and brass wiping rod. This rifle is right out of an attic in Central Maine and has never been offered on the market. It has been in the consignor’s family for at least three generations. SN 9718 CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching, with the serial number on the left side of the lower tang under the wood, stamped in the top tang groove on the stock, and inside the toe of the buttplate. Bbl assembly retains 55-65% original blue, thin on the top and side flats, strong and bright in the sheltered areas. The receiver has sharp edges with a beautiful medium-to-dark mustard patina. There are some light screwdriver scratches around the screw-heads on the left side and a series of fine scratches on the right sideplate and a few other minor nicks and scratches. The wood is sound and retains a beautiful dark oil finish. The top tang wood screw is missing, the lower tang wood screw has been replaced by a 2-1/2” round-head wood screw and the other top tang screw is battered. The wiping rod has been over-tightened and slightly mushroomed on the female ends. The bore is sharp and bright, with scattered pitting. 4-50188 JR548
