FINE HENRY CLAY MOURNING RIBBON.
FINE HENRY CLAY MOURNING RIBBON. 1852 Henry Clay mourning ribbon. A Kentucky politician with an amazing record of public service, Clay ran for high office several times: as a Democratic-Republican candidate for both President and Vice President in 1824, National Republican candidate for President, 1832, and a Whig candidate in 1844. Clay served as Speaker of the House and was instrumental in conducting the War of 1812. He was also one of the architects of the Treaty of Ghent ending that conflict. Clay is credited with drafting the compromise of 1850 in an effort to avoid civil war between pro and anti-slavery states' rights interests. A truly revered political figure, Clay was known for his amiable nature and love of debate. By his final bid for the Presidency, a slogan "Justice for Clay" was widely used denoting that he had both earned and was "entitled" to be President. This tribute is an affixed paper portrait on a silk that is then draped with black crepe.
