GUN W/ CASE. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 1/2". S# 1865 (1906). The 30" chopper lump bbls. are engraved "Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid Pressed Steel" & "Henry Atkin (from Purdey's) 41 Jermyn Street London. S.W." on very narrow swamped game rib. Rear portion of rib has scroll engraving & is gold inlaid w/ the number "3" (this gun was the third gun of a trio w/ "3" gold inlaid on top of action & forend tip). Bbl. flats are stamped w/ London nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers along w/ 1979 London reproofs at .740. Flats are also stamped w/ Whitworth "Sheaf of Wheat" logos. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped "S.H." & w/ serial numbers. Water table is stamped w/ London view proofs, S# & "E.C. Hodges" (most likely the actual maker of this gun). Case hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences & is opened by sidelever on right side. Action also features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) & dbl. triggers. Action is engraved w/ 80% coverage classic British rose & scroll which is very nicely cut. "Henry Atkin" is on each lockplate. Blued trigger guard is also scroll engraved. S# is on tang. Very finely marbled & lightly fiddle figured dark European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 5/16" over brown pigskin leather covered pad. Stock also features sm. drop points, flat top point pattern checkering at grip & a silver oval engraved "JFC" on toeline. Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .727", L .737". Restriction: R .009" (IC), L .020" (MOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .022", L .020". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/8". DAC: 1 1/2-". LOP: 14 5/16". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 11 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is accompanied by a maker's leather case w/ brass corners lined in scarlet cloth. A "Henry Atkin 88 Jermyn Street" label is in lid. Case contains some Turk's heads & mops. CONDITION: good as refinished. Bbls. retaining nearly all of a good quality reblack, most likely done at time of reproof, engraving remains clear. Action & lockplates are cleaned to silver gray over a sm. amount of scattered pitting. Engraving remains sharp & clear. Sidelever & trigger guard retain most of their reblue, engraving on both is softened, especially so on trigger guard tang. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish w/ a scattering of subsequent marks, checkering recut. Bores are bright & shiny. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong & in time. Case leather is very dark w/ a considerable amount of top grain loss, rubs & marks, stitching detached along sides w/ losses of leather. Old straps & handle are good. Interior cloth is fair, considerably soiled w/ many rubs through, quite dirty. Label is very good, lightly foxed & soiled. Partitions are good. Guns by Henry Atkin are always well-made and generally sought after. (22-167/MGM). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.
