PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE BY “C. F. SHAN”. Cal. 40. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2". Heavy 1.35" across flats oct. 32 1/2" bbl. w/ 1 1/4" false muzzle is engraved “C. F. SHAN” (listed in Sellers “location unknown”). Bbl. fitted w/ sm. V notch rear sight w/ elevation slide & bead post front sight protected by tube. Patent breech w/ 2 gold bands is scroll engraved & breech iron also engraved is fitted w/ aperture tang sight adj. for windage & elevation. Unmarked, front spring percussion lock w/ well filed serpentine hammer is also engraved w/ well cut open scroll. Dbl. set triggers are fitted in trigger plate which extends 8" toward German silver thimble & has fancy filed outline. Schutezn style trigger guard w/ curl to rear has pricker screwed into rear of tang. Fancy outline pierced patch box has release button in 5" return of heavy Swiss style offhand buttplate. Lg. sideplate has 3 lg. piercings. All furniture is of German silver & is nicely scroll & line border engraved. Dense American walnut stock exhibits crotch figure in butt & has lg. right hand cheekpiece. Swan neck grip is coarsely checkered. A hickory ramrod is held by 2 oct. pipes soldered to under rib of bbl. CONDITION: good, iron parts retaining a brown to black patina w/ cleaned silver highlights. Stock has most oil refinish w/ many marks. There are repaired splits along bbl. channel on both sides of forend. German silver mts. are nicely toned. Bore is bright & shiny w/ sharp rifling throughout & has a few minor scattered pits. Lock & triggers work well. (01-19000/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
