Baluster shape body on large pedestal base is mounted with two large scrolled handles with molded acanthus decoration. Domed cover has classic pineapple finial. Base, body, and cover have repousse acanthus decoration. Body is stamped with hallmarks "I.D" (possibly John Darwall), sterling, London, and 1769. Body is engraved "THIS PIECE OF PLATE is presented by PATRICK COLQUHOUN, ESQr. of London to JOHN GREIG ESQr. of the County of Ontario in the STATE of New York in the UNITED STATES of America. As a small testimony of the just sense entertained of his able and judicious management of an IMPORTANT NEGOTIATION, which by his indefatigable Zeal and unremitting attention, has been brought to a Satisfactory Conclusion. LONDON 20 AUGst. 1817." (John Greig (1779 - 1858) was a U. S. representative, lawyer, bank president, and land speculator living in Canandaigua, NY. A large number of his papers are at Cornell University library.) SIZE: 12-1/2" high. 5-1/2" wide at widest point of body. 10-1/2" across from handle to handle. 46 oz. 13.33 dwt. PROVENANCE: From a fine Kentucky Estate. CONDITION: Very fine. Some creasing to body at right side of engraving, and a few minor pings. Finial somewhat dented in and askew. Cup has been lacquered inside and out, with some areas worn through and toning. 9-92273
