This cane appears to be a large bamboo cane with a root handle, but the button on the shaft suggests that there ismore than meets the eye. When the button is depressed, the cane opens to reveal a nearly 19" long dagger, or sword.The blade has a "T"- shaped cross-section, and has never been sharpened. It is inscribed with a French maker(Etienne Flire?) and "1876" along the back of the blade. There is a brass cap on the scabbard part of the shaft whichnot only directs the insertion of the blade, but is the clasp to hold the catch which keeps the cane from separatingwhen blade is sheathed. The root handle is 2.25" in diameter, and the bamboo shaft is nearly 1.5" in diameter for itsentire length. It ends in a crutch tip ferrule. Splits in the bamboo shaft are old, and filled, and appear to be original tothe cane. Overall length, 35.5".(EST 400-600)
