FINE CONFEDERATE D-GUARD BOWIE CARRIED IN WAR BY
DANIEL C. RICE, 7TH KENTUCKY CAVALRY, JOHN HUNT MORGAN’S COMMAND. Classic massive Confederate D-guard, 17.75" blade, 2" wide, .3" thick. This is a big knife made for only one purpose, “kill Yankees”. Knife has been well preserved in wonderful “as-found” condition including classic lead riveted leather scabbard inscribed “D. C. Rice”. This knife was found in Northern Kentucky in 2002 & the family only knew that it belonged to a Confederate Cavalryman. There are 2 Confederate cavalrymen w/ same initials & last name, one in the 27th Texas Cavalry (David C. Rice) & another in 7th & 11Th Kentucky Cavalry which was recruited in Kentucky, so most likely this was Daniel C Rice’s knife. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder containing 2 letters of provenance from Shannon Pritchard & Lee Hadaway. The "Confederate Bowie Knife Guide" by Lee Hadaway 2004. The knife is pictured & described on pages 38 & 39 of this text. CONDITION: very good overall, blade retains original tool marks & appears to be as it was originally made, gray w/ scattered staining & light pitting. D-guard is also uncleaned w/ iron patina. 2 Wood slabs forming grip are sound w/ light scuffing, some shrinkage. The original heavy brown leather sheath retains rawhide sewn belt loop w/ name easily discerned. Rivets have lead patina. Last inch of sheath is broken & missing at tip. Exemplary condition for Confederate local made bowie. (02-14830/JS). $5,000-7,000.
