BELONGING TO W.C. COCHRAN OF THE 22ND GEORGIA. Overall length: 22 1/8". Blade length: 17 1/2". A classic Civil War Confederate, southern made, D- guard bowie knife w/ an exceptionally long blade that has a rare ID etched into the blade. The straight, nearly untapered blade appears to be a spear point at first glance but actually has a 2 1/2" false edge. The blade is etched, “W. C. COCHRAN” in absolutely period etching. Iron D-guard of classic form w/ turned wood handle that appears to be oak. We could locate 6 Confederate soldiers named W. Cochran or W. C. Cochran. No scabbard. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: An old paper that accompanied the knife reads, “GEORGIA D-GUARD BOWIE CLASSIC STYLE WITH ID ON BLADE. “W.C. COCHRAN” PAULDING COUNTY GEORGIA ENLISTED 4-12-62 CO C GA 22ND INFANTRY ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA GETTYSBURG 2ND MANASSAS MALVERN HILL”. CONDITION: blade has a mottled gray patina w/ scattered areas of cleaned light pitting. The engraved name is quite clear. Guard is undamaged. Grip shows expected wear w/ scattered dents & dings. There is notable iron staining extending up from the guard & down from the pommel. (02-15885/BF). $2,000-2,800.
