AMOSKEAG CONTRACT PERCUSSION RIFLE MUSKET & BAYONET. Cal. .58. S# NSN. Bbl 40". Standard configuration of "special model 1861/1863" contract rifle musket, 40" barrel dated 1864,
VP / eaglehead proofs, "A.M.C." inspection stamped forward of bolster. 3 position 2 leaf rear sight, 3 clamping barrel bands without band springs made late 1863 and early 1864, return to band springs with Springfield model 1864 and contractors required to follow. Bolster marked with spread wing eagle, unique to special models made without cleanout screws. Lock marked "U" & "S" on either side of eagle above "AMOSKEAG mfg Co / MANCHESTER, N.H." & "1863" at tail. Walnut stock has no government inspection cartouches but does have "B" stamped rear of trigger guard. This is superior condition musket, original, & complete with bayonet, 16" blade. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, crisp markings, metal is spotted gray/brown smooth patina, pitting at breech, stock has raised grain, sharp edges. Mechanics crisp, bright rifled bore. Bayonet fits well with US surcharge. PROVENANCE: Michael E. Bray estate collection (01-23291/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
