FINE AND RARE PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK.
18th century, possibly Boston. Wrought with many elements and overall composition similar to the "Fishing Lady" textiles done in the Boston area in the early and mid 18th century. This particular example wrought with a central couple flanked by flowering trees in which can be seen a putti. The sun visible amongst clouds above a pair of exotic birds in flight between the couple. In the foreground is a shepherdess and male figure playing a wind instrument. A curious feature is the placement of a recumbent lion and leopard in the central foreground flanked by sheep. This small tapestry remains in very nice condition, with pleasing muted colors, now mounted in a later frame with foam core backing. NOTE: For more detailed discussion of the elements within Boston Needleworks of the Fishing Lady series, see "Needlework and Historical Survey" by Betty Ring, pp. 46-52, two articles by Nancy Graves Cabot. SIZE: Sight: 20-1/2" x 20-1/2". Overall: 25-1/2" x 25-3/4". CONDITION: Color and palette as mentioned with areas of deterioration to foundation throughout the center of the work. Otherwise good. 9-90659
