1/6 plate ambrotype in full case with separated cover, nice flower embossed on the burgundy velvet inside the cover. This is an example of an early ambrotype when the process was intended to directly compete with the daguerreotype, and it has its own ambrotypical excellence. A label inside the case indicates this was acquired in 1942 by the Albert Raborn Phillips collection. Philips was one of the great collectors of that era, and was instrumental in the collection and sale of major daguerreotypes from the Southworth and Hawes material that had been in the possession of the Holman Book Shop in Boston.
