FILLMORE, MILLARD
(1800 - 1874) Thirteenth President of the United States who succeeded to the presidency upon the death of Taylor. Fine content A.L.S. as Congressman "Fillmore" 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 6, 1841, to Solomon G. Haven, his law partner regarding the possibility that his bitter enemy William H. Seward may succeed in his bid for Senator for New York! In part: "...I have but a moment left to acknowledge the receipt of yours of the 29th & 30th...I do not think Whittelesey intends to resign his Vice Chancellorship, but know nothing. I learn from Albany that Sewart intends to be a candidate for the U.S. Senate if Talmadge resigns. Should this take place, unless our legislation has more firmness that ordinarily falls to the lot of frail mortals, he must succeed. He holds a tremendous power in the patronage of the government, and that would all be wielded for his personal elevation. But it will make a dreadful blowup. Many here would hardly submit to such an outrage...". While Nathaniel Talmadge did not resign as Senator, Seward, whose anti-slavery views were anathema to Fillmore, indeed became Senator of New York in 1849. The hostility between the two would come to head a year later over the Compromise of 1850. Near fine condition.
